Seventy-four senators signed a letter sent to President Obama on Dec. 20 that urges him to continue placing robust pressure on the Iranian regime to persuade it to halt its nuclear weapons program.

The letter, spearheaded by Sens. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), urges the administration to implement all existing U.S. sanctions and adopt even stronger ones, to work with other countries to deepen Iran’s diplomatic isolation, and to reiterate its readiness to take military action should Iranian intransigence continue.

Key Points

  1. Iran represents a growing threat.
Iran is moving dangerously closer to a nuclear weapons capability, a development that would pose a major threat to the United States and Israel and spur a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

  2. More sanctions needed to stop Iran.
The United States must implement existing sanctions and adopt newer and stronger ones in order to persuade Tehran to halt its illicit behavior.

  3. A nuclear-capable cannot be allowed.
America needs to lead an international campaign to isolate Iran diplomatically and make clear that it is ready to take military action should Tehran’s intransigence continue.
